Today we try to discuss some errors while dealing with Tape Cartridge (without Barcode) in a Standalone Drive (without Barcode reader).

There may be so many errors while dealing with Tape Cartridge in a Standalone Tape Drive. But I feel that they are some which a newbie can face in his initial dealing with Tape Drive and Tape Cartridge.

Our Environment

Netbackup Server = version 7.

OS of Netbackup = Win2003 R2.

Tape Drive = Standalone with 4mm density.

Tape Cartridge = 36/72 GB with 4mm density.

Errors

  1. Error while labeling the Tape Cartridge.
  2. Error while expiring Tape Cartridge images.
  3. Error 92 while deleting the Tape Cartridge.
  4. Error while inventory.
  5. Netbackup Activity Monitor Still locate old Tape for backup next day

  1. Error while labeling the Tape Cartridge.

I was facing an error while labeling the Tape Cartridge. Although the command was correct but the pool name was Case Sensitive and I was ignoring mistakenly the Case Sensitivity. Below is the example of a wrong and right command with the Error which I was facing.

bplabel -m MEDIA_ID -d DENSITY -o -p Netbackup -u 0                 (Wrong Command)

Error reported by media operation: resource request failed          (Error)

bplabel -m MEDIA_ID -d DENSITY -o -p NetBackup -u 0                 (Right Command)

2.  Error while expiring Tape Cartridge

In this section we may face two issues while expiring the Media. One is when the Tape Cartridge may not have the Data OR its already Blank and Second when there is a data and the bpexpdate command is not able to expire the Media Cartridge. So first we will discuss the issue regarding the Blank Media and Second we will discuss the Media with Backup Images is not being expired.

First issue :

First see the below snap for a reference.

Actually the Tape Cartridge does not have any data thats why we cant delete.

Note:-

(When Expiring the Backup images OR running the command of bpexpdate -d 0 -m MEDIA_ID, make sure that you dont have important/critical data in the Tape Cartridge.)

Second issue :

The below Activity Monitor result and also the result of suspend and expire fails
Note: The Media ID which is failed to suspend/expired is not in use  OR not in the Tape Drive

Quick Resolution
1.)      Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbrbutil -dump > C:\Tape-Cart-Info
In the Tape-Cart-Info file you will find the allocationKey=23205 with the respective media ID mediaId=2013L4 under the MDS allocations in EMM section. Use allocationKey and media ID in the below command.
         C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbrbutil -releaseMDS MediaID
2.)    Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbrbutil -release23205 2013L4
Now you will be successful in using the bpexpdate command OR doing duplicate

Although the above problem resolution link/TN has a comprehensive material but I took time to understand so I described a quick resolution too. I hope the above quick resolution will help

3.  Error 92 while deleting the Tape Cartridge.

First see the below snap for a reference.

As the above command says that the Media is already assigned. So we cant delete the Media. First we have to expire all the Data/Backup Images which are in(Tape Cartridge) it. Below is a example snap which shows how to unassign the Tape Cartridge and then how to remove it.

Note:-

(When Expiring the Backup images OR running the command of bpexpdate -d 0 -m MEDIA_ID, make sure that you dont have important/critical data in the Tape Cartridge.)

4.  Error while inventory.

First see the below snap for your reference

This error comes when there is no Data/Backup Images on Tape Cartridge.

I also came across to the below error while doing inventory. First see the below snap for your reference.

The above error comes when we just insert the Tape Cartridge and instantly run the inventory command. Just wait for a while untill the Tape Drive successfully sence the Tape Cartridge.

5. Netbackup Activity Monitor Still locate old Tape for backup next day

One problem which may be faced. Suppose I have successfully taken the backup on a tape cartridge yesterday. Today i am trying to take the backup on a new tape but still the tape drive is locating to the old tape on which i took the backup yesterday. ( Yesterday tape name A99998 and the tape which is right now in the tape drive name 311002  ).

I would like to share a Activity Monitor example:

Activity Monitor

What need to do that we have to suspend the old tape if we want to take the backup on the new tape.
for example:

Suspend the tape A99998. through this tape you will be able to restore from it but this tape will not be considered for further backups.

bpmedia -suspend -m A99998
